Our Philosophy: Music Roots Evolution

Music

Music, of course, has been part of virtually all liberation struggles from Joshua at Jericho to South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle. While committed to a progressive social agenda, SLF brings established as well as new and emerging musical forms to communities with an eye toward liberating minds and asses at once.

Roots

As an organization seeking, at fundament, to bring music to people, SLF is deeply concerned with music’s integrity and history. We honor the creators and innovators who shaped the culture from which we draw. From nameless American farm laborers singing field hollers in the crop rows to the fearless Fela Kuti, Robert Johnson to George Clinton, Tito Puente to Nina Simone, Miles Davis to Lee “Scratch” Perry, James Brown to DJ Shadow, Biggie Smalls to Chuck Berry, Grandmaster Flash to King Tubby, SLF respects its musical forebears.

Evolution

SLF is committed to music’s legacy and survival as a living art, as well as providing a platform for cultural and creative exchange. Part of our desire to integrate ourselves into the communities we work in as a beneficial presence lies in our concern for cultural survival through education. We strive to bring the next generation into the same feeling and passion for music.

Our Mission Statement

SOUND LIBERATION FRONT (SLF) is a Brooklyn-based non-profit organization devoted to the power of music as a liberating and unifying force capable of catalyzing positive social change. Through organizing music and art events, we seek to bring people together for enjoyment and to foster greater awareness and community among us all. In recognition of—and with deep respect for—music’s power, SLF programs a diverse range of events which function symbiotically with the communities they serve.
